Cell Culture
Why is it that so many people are performing cell culture in their laboratories? Cell culture has many applications. Vaccines for polio, measles, chicken pox, and rubella are made in cell cultures. Cell culture can be used to reproduce a large number of cells of interest. After these cells have been harvested in cell culture media their various structures can be immunostained and viewed under a flourescent or confocal microscope. Cell culture protocol involves the isolation of cells from their natural environment and growing them in cell culture flasks while suspended in cell culture media. These cell culture flasks are placed in a CO2 incubator at 37 degrees celsius and at 5% CO2. Cell culture methods may vary depending on the cell type. Cell culture contamination occurs quite often due to the sensitivity of cell culture techniques. Nalge Nunc, Mediatech, and Corning all make products used in cell culture. Mammalian cell culture has a wide range of applications and is performed by scientists around the world.
